Slovenia

If you like mountains, the sea, Medieval castles,

underground caves, thermal spas, green woods and

museums, you'll love Slovenia.

The landscape is beautiful with lush green fields, hills and mountains. Surprisingly, we saw very few farm animals; no cows or sheep, but we’re told that there are some!  Tomatoes and grapes are grown in most private gardens Slovenia gained its independence on 25th June, 1992. Previously it was part of Yugoslavia. It is very small with Ljubljana, the capital located in the centre – you’ll need 2 hours max to reach any part of the country. Slovenia has a population of approximately 2 million people with approx. 400,000 living in Ljubljana. There is approximately 12% unemployment with the highest rate being in the east of the country.

Frogs

To many Slovenians, the people of Ljubljana are known as “Žabarji” – frog people. The nickname was adopted because of the abundance of frogs in the area – this also gave rise to one of the most distinctive dishes of the Slovenian capital: frog legs. Through the ages, local residents would catch the frogs and sell them in the city. In the 16th century, the fish market in Ljubljana sold frog legs which were among its most prized delicacies. Throughout their breeding marshlands, to the south of the city, drivers are alerted to the frog’s presence by road signs warning of amphibian crossings.
