Birds

We saw 143 species of birds

The variety of colourful birds was unexpected. From a hide we watched a flock of about 20 hyacinth macaws and we also saw the red & green and blue & gold macaws. We saw the rare helmeted manakin and a potoo, which is hard to see as it completely camouflaged to look like part of the tree trunk (see the first photo).  Other birds include jabiru storks, jacanas, toucans, roseate spoonbill, cormorants, antshrikes, flycatchers, screamer, puffbird, rufous homeros, spinetail, jacamare and several types of herons, ibis, kingfishers, vultures, kites, hawks, caracara, guans, rails, terns, doves, tanagers, parakeets, parrots, cuckoos, owls (including burrowing owls), nightjars, swifts, hummingbirds and woodpeckers.
