Hotel Palacio La Cajiga

Stunning Views and Excellent Hospitality

After a flight from Stanstead to Santander airport, we arrived around midnight at Hotel Palacio La Cajiga in Abandames, a little village in Asturias, 1 km away from Panes, between the mountains of Cuera and the Peaks of Europe. The Cajiga Palace Hotel an ancient 17th century Palace, is categorized as historic and cultural Asturian Heritage. A Renaissance front with Mier’s Coat of Arm, inside, all ancient architectural elements have been kept. Each room has its own character with different wall colour and furniture. When we opened the blinds in the morning we were stunned at the beautiful scenery of the river Cares and Hermida’s Mountain pass. We enjoyed having breakfast in the garden overlooking the valley and surrounding hills, watching the birds and listening to the bells on the sheep and cows. The friendliness and hospitality of the owners was exceptional and we very much welcomed and appreciated their suggestions of walks and restaurants. It was a wonderful place in a small countryside village which was a relaxing base from which to explore the area.  We stayed for 5 nights but would have happily stayed on if we could. The owners, hotel and landscape in the Picos are most memorable.

Local Restaurants

We ate at a local restaurant in Panes, El Rinconin, which has a range of dishes from which you choose as many as you like to share. The food was good but you need to be able to speak Spanish to know what you are ordering.
